In January 2026, private sector businesses in the United States introduced 22,000 new jobs, a figure that follows a downwardly revised increase of 37,000 in December and falls short of the anticipated 48,000 rise. January proved to be a muted month for employment, although the healthcare sector showed significant strength by adding 74,000 positions. The financial activities sector saw a growth of 14,000 jobs, while construction gained 9,000 positions. Additionally, the trade, transportation, and utilities, alongside the leisure and hospitality sectors, each contributed 4,000 jobs. Conversely, the professional and business services sector experienced a decline, losing 57,000 jobs, and the manufacturing industry was down by 8,000 jobs, continuing its monthly job losses since March 2024. Medium-sized enterprises, defined as those employing 50 to 249 workers, were responsible for creating 37,000 new jobs. In contrast, smaller firms saw no change, and large corporations experienced a reduction of 18,000 jobs. "2025 witnessed a slowdown in job creation, with private employers adding 398,000 jobs, a decrease from the 771,000 added in 2024. Despite a steady deceleration in job growth over the past three years, wage growth has remained consistent," commented Dr. Nela Richardson, Chief Economist at ADP.
